The Plumber General

Pam Spaulding has posted a copy of James Holsinger’s article, “Pathophysiology of Male Homosexuality” that I mentioned previously. It’s a fascinating read. The man who our president has named to be the nation’s lead health educator demonstrates his deep and sophisticated knowledge of medicine with statements like this:

In fact, the logical complementarity of the human sexes has been so recognized in our culture that it has entered our vocabulary in the form of naming various pipe fittings either the male fitting or the female fitting depending upon which one interlocks within the other.

Well, that settles it. If that’s how they label parts on the shelf at the hardware store, by all means we must follow that when making decisions about human rights and equality.

By the way, is there a kind of pipe that explains blow jobs? Because following the logic in Holsinger’s article, the penis should only ever be placed in a vagina, not in parts of the digestive system. That would seem to me to rule out any oral sex, unless there’s an appropriate hardware analogy that will justify it.

Like so many, Holsinger confuses sex acts with sexuality. Opposite-sex couples do most of the same things in bed that same-sex couples do, except, I suppose, those missionary-position-for-procreation-only-and-don’t-enjoy-it couples. Maybe Holsinger’s one of them. If so, my condolences to Mrs. Holsinger. I bet she wishes that her husband would learn a thing or two from lesbians.

If Dr. Holsinger wants to argue the health risks of particular acts of sexual intercourse, he is welcome to do that, although I would hope he would try using actual, you know, science to make his case. But what he can’t do is make the leap from talking about types of intercourse to making decisions to take away rights from an entire population of citizens.

Maybe next he’ll rescind the voting rights of anyone who’s ever given or received oral sex.

That’s one way for Rick Santorum to get back in office.

eta: ABC news picked up the story.

At what point do you say that hepatitis, bowel infections, and rectal trauma are such that you have to say, “Well maybe this really isn’t so healthy?” Is there one single study out there that proves the proposition that diseases among active homosexuals are comparable to those among normal people? You can search the Internet till the cows come home and never find anything except evidence proving the opposite.

    JF McKenna,

Actually, the only place I have to search is in the articles Holsinger himself cited in his article. Those studies were about HETEREOSEXUAL couples, or, as you call them, “normal” people.
